Household Employees Have Rights Too
Encino’s residential neighborhoods employ a lot of housekeepers, nannies, caregivers, and gardeners, and household workers are often the least aware of their rights. Working for a family instead of a company doesn’t take you out of California’s wage laws.
Overtime depends on what you do. Under the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights, a nanny or caregiver who spends at least 80 percent of their time supervising, feeding, or dressing a child or someone who needs care is generally a “personal attendant,” owed overtime after 9 hours in a day or 45 hours in a week. Housekeepers and other household workers who don’t live in the home are generally owed overtime after 8 hours in a day or 40 in a week. Household workers are also owed at least the Los Angeles minimum wage for work in Encino: $18.42 an hour since July 1, 2026.
California wage protections apply regardless of immigration status, and it’s illegal for an employer to threaten to report someone’s status because they complained about pay.
Medical and Professional Offices
Ventura Boulevard through Encino is lined with medical, dental, and professional offices. Common problems in smaller practices include overtime on four-day schedules, breaks, and pregnancy and disability accommodations. Office assistants are also commonly misclassified as exempt.
